What vitamin C actually does to skin

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD ascorbate)

"Higher percentage is better." Penetration studies show a plateau at around 20%. A 30% serum delivers approximately the same active dose to your skin as a 20% serum, with more irritation and a higher price.

"You can DIY it with lemon juice." Lemon juice sits around pH 2, contains a fraction of the ascorbic acid of a formulated serum, and includes furocoumarins that are phototoxic — meaning sun exposure afterwards can produce a chemical burn. This is a genuinely bad idea, not merely an ineffective one.

"It makes you sun-sensitive." The opposite. Vitamin C is photoprotective. You still need sunscreen, because it is a supplement to SPF and not a substitute, but it does not increase photosensitivity the way retinoids and AHAs can.

Realistically, an opened bottle of water-based L-ascorbic acid holds up for around three months. Store it away from the shower's heat and humidity — a bedroom drawer is better than a bathroom shelf.
